A stiff brake pedal can be a worrying sign, but it doesn’t always mean a complete failure of the system. Oleksandr Chaleko, head of the service department at UKRAVTO GROUP, explained the main reasons for this problem and their solutions.
Causes of the defect
- Vacuum booster. Damage or loss of airtightness in the hoses can lead to a stiff brake pedal. To check the booster’s operation, you simply need to stop the engine and press the pedal several times.
- ABS or ESP malfunction. In this case, the corresponding indicators will light up on the dashboard, and special equipment is required for accurate diagnosis.
- Calipers. Their jamming can cause steering issues, and one of the wheels may overheat.
- Worn brake hoses or a faulty master brake cylinder. These problems manifest as uneven resistance in the brake pedal.
Consequences for the driver
Even in the event of electronic or vacuum brake booster failure, the brakes remain functional but will require more effort. Therefore, in difficult conditions, it’s best to refrain from further movement. Regular maintenance is crucial to avoid brake issues.
For example, checking the airtightness of vacuum hoses, timely replacement of brake fluid, lubricating caliper rails, and monitoring the wear of pads and discs.
In short, a stiff brake pedal does not always indicate a serious defect. However, it is important to detect and resolve the problem in a timely manner to avoid danger on the road. Regular maintenance of braking systems helps to prevent unwanted situations and ensures safe driving.Read also
