The EU has significantly reduced the volume of imports of Ukrainian grain and sugar.

The European Union has decided to reduce the import of Ukrainian wheat and sugar by establishing new quotas that will limit supply volumes by 70-80%. This decision is aimed at supporting European farmers, reports the 'Glavcom' portal citing Reuters.

Temporary cancellation of duties and quotas for Ukraine

In a show of solidarity following the start of the war in 2022, the EU opened food markets to Ukraine, but due to the large amount of imports, mainly grain, sugar, and meat products, Brussels decided to reinstate restrictions.

New quotas and their volumes

• Wheat: Annual quota - 1.3 million tons, which is 30% more compared to previous levels, but less than in the last three years.
• Sugar: Established quota - 100 thousand tons, which is almost 4 times less than before.
• Barley: The quota will increase to 450 thousand tons.
• Poultry: The quota will rise to 120 thousand tons.

Reaction of Ukrainian farmers

The Ukrainian farmers' lobbying association UCAB has expressed dissatisfaction with the new restrictions and considers them a 'step back'. Grain traders are confident that the Ukrainian product can find a market in North Africa and Asia.
