The National Bank of Ukraine has recorded an increase in the number of counterfeit dollar banknotes in circulation. In the first half of 2024, more counterfeit bills were discovered compared to the previous period.

According to official statistics, there are currently 3.4 counterfeits per million genuine banknotes. Despite the increase, this figure remains lower compared to the pre-crisis indicators when 7.1 counterfeit bills were found per million genuine.

Hundred-dollar bills are the primary target of counterfeiters

The most vulnerable in this regard are hundred-dollar bills. Among foreign currencies, the US dollar is the most frequently counterfeited. This makes the process of exchanging them especially risky for citizens.

The main places to receive counterfeit bills are outside official exchange points, such as spontaneous markets, transport hubs, or street currency trading.

To determine an authentic 100-dollar bill, it is necessary to pay attention to some key security elements:
