The Drone War in Ukraine Enters a New Phase – Newsweek.

Russia and Ukraine Are Using Fiber Optic Drones on the Battlefield
During the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine, unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) have become an important tool for combat operations. Significant progress has been recorded in the development of drones and technologies for their use. In this context, Moscow and Kyiv are seeking ways to make their UAVs more effective than the enemy's.
One option for combating drones is the use of fiber optic drones. Experts explain that fiber optics transmit information and energy in the form of light pulses through thin glass threads. This allows for more data to be transmitted through optical connections. Russia is already using this type of UAV, but Ukraine is also keeping pace.
Fiber optic drones have several advantages. They cannot be jammed or intercepted, and they provide better video quality for the operator. Enemy forces cannot locate the drone using radio waves.
However, fiber optic drones are more expensive and heavier, which reduces their potential for effective application. To balance this, larger drones with bigger frames and powerful batteries are needed.
Experts predict that fiber optic drones will become even more widespread by 2025.
Currently, the 1055th day of the war is ongoing, during which 124 combat engagements have been recorded. Ukrainian defenders are actively repelling enemy attacks and delivering fire damage.
The hottest battle is taking place in the Pokrovsk and Kursk directions. The enemy is conducting air and missile strikes, using drones, and shelling.
