Merz responded on whether Ukraine will join the EU by 2034.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed doubts about the possibility of Ukraine joining the European Union by 2034. He emphasized the need to first end the war in Ukraine and then focus on the country's reconstruction. This information was shared by Merz after a meeting with the President of Romania.
The Chancellor stated that 'the main priority is to do everything possible to end this war. Then we will talk about the reconstruction of Ukraine.' He also added that the process of the country's accession to the EU is linked to the resolution of the conflict and the subsequent restoration of the country.
N-tv: 'But this will take several years... It will probably not even affect the medium-term financial prospects of the European Union.'
According to the publication, as long as Ukraine is under threat due to the war, joining the EU becomes impossible. However, the President of Romania believes that the European Union should accept every country that has met all the conditions for membership in the bloc.
Ukraine will first have to end the war by its own efforts before starting the process of joining the European Union. However, this does not mean that Ukraine's future in the European Union is excluded; it only requires resolving urgent issues before taking steps towards membership.
